Notch – not a feature, its a mistake and please don’t make it a trend

Notch is culmination of Engineering inability

Ever had the experience of sitting in a movie hall, behind a tall person? This person would block a part of the screen from your view until the end of the movie. No matter how to try to move around, you will always be blocked by this person. But over the time, your eye and brain will learn to negate that block and you start to view the movie. This is exactly what the “notch” does to you on the iPhone X.

The notch is not a feature, it is purely an inability. The inability of the design and engineering to accommodate the sensor and still manage to give you a full vision display experience. But a full vision display experience is hampered by this notch. Apple has always been a trendsetter in the field of technology. Right from a mouse to a capacitive screen, they have introduced a lot of new stuff that has transformed our lives. But now things are turning dark.

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix introduced to the world, the concept of the edge-to-edge display. LG G6 went a step further and introduced 18:9 aspect ratio and these two trends have caught fire in the Android world. Probably this hurts Apple’s ego and they took things seriously and went a step ahead and introduce the edge to edge display in the iPhone X with about 83% screen to body ratio. But they were unable to conceal the sensor within the bezels. They were unable to introduce the fingerprint scanner under the display. So they came up with Face ID and this required additional sensors on the mobile. Unable to find a suitable place for all these sensors in their bezels, they put it bank on the display’s forehead and called it a notch.

If you read it again, you would notice a bunch of inabilities. But these inabilities were glorified and now other mobile manufacturers are perceiving it as a feature. A quick scan on the social media would reveal that the consumers hate the notch, but the manufacturers are striving to push it down the consumers’ throat. A bunch of mobiles are lined up to be released with this notch

As my fellow blogger Jitendra Soni, often says “it’s notchsense”, it truly does not make any sense. I would prefer a mobile with a regular 16:9 aspect ratio as compared to a mobile with 18:9 aspect ratio with a notch. Samsung S9/S9+, Honor View 10 are good examples of how you can still have a high screen to body ratio and yet accommodate most of the sensors on the front of the mobile.

Huawei P20 Pro, LG G7, Oneplus 6, Oppo R15 are a few mobiles that could be released with a notch. But this is unconfirmed news and I pray that the mobile manufacturers listen to the masses and ditch the notch.
