Microsoft Lumia 532 #NeverCompromise Challenge with budget android phones

Microsoft Lumia 532 is the new budget mobile from Microsoft. One the heels of Nokia Lumia 520, the Lumia 532 is a successor to Lumia 530. To emerge for the shadows the best selling mobile 520 is an Himalayan task and even the 530 was not able to do. Now will the Lumia 532 be able to it? The Lumia 532 is a entry level budget device and it faces stiff competition from budget Android devices. The budget Android devices are aggressively priced and spec’d. Now let me get these devices into the ring and see who survives the knockout challenge.

Here are the key specifications of Lumia 532

Processor: Qualcomm MSM8212 Snapdragon 200 Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7
RAM: 1 GB
Storage: 8 GB + SD card
Camera: 5 Mp with no Flash and VGA front camera
Battery: 1560 mAh
Display: 4 inch

Round one: Hardware and software optimization

The challenge is to see who has best hardware software optimization. The Lumia 532 is powered by a Snapdragon 200 Quad core processor which is clocked at 1.2 GHz and houses 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage. It has a dedicated GPU Adreno 302. The Android devices at this price range, the Redmi 2 or Lenovo A6000 or Moto E are powered by Snapdragon 400 processor. While the Lumia 532 seems to be low on spec, the Windows Phone 8.1 is an operating system that can run smoothly on bare minimum hardware. The Android is a heavy operating system and it definitely needs muscle power under the hood for better performance. The budget devices compromise heavily on specifications and this leads to a sluggish UI.

Round two: Camera

The challenge is to see who has the best camera in the same price band. The Lumia 532 has a 5 MP camera. The camera is an fixed focus camera and it has no flash. The front camera is also a VGA camera. Budget Android devices Redmi 2 and Lenovo A6000 have 8 MP camera and 2 MP front facing camera. Also the camera in these budget devices shoot decent quality images.

Round three: Battery
The Lumia 532 is powered by a 1560 mAh battery, but it has a small display to power up. While the budget android devices have much higher battery capacity, they have a larger screen to feed power. On my regular usage, I found that the Lumia 532 stays powered on for little over a day and the same with the android devices as well.

Round three is tied

Round four: Build quality
Lumia is known for its build quality. The top end Lumia devices sport polycarbonate body and a few also have a hint of metal. But the Lumia 532 has neither, yet the design and material used gives it a solid build quality. The android devices in this price band doesnt match with Lumia 532 when it comes to build quality.

Round five: Connectivity speed

When it comes to data connectivity, the Lumia 532 looses the round even before entering the arena. It doesn’t support 4G, while most of the android devices at the same price band supports 4G LTE.

Round five goes to Android

So now the result is 2:2 and its a tie. It all boils down to your personal preference. If you want a snappy, handy, robust and ergonomic mobile then the Lumia 532 is your choice. Lumia 532 retails for Rs 6200.

But it here.
