4G devices on the rise in India in 3Q15, according to IDC

In the third quarter of 2015, 28.3 million smartphones were shipped in India, according to IDC’s APAC mobile phone tracker. This is up 21.4%, from 23.3 million units shipped in third quarter of 2014. The good news is that one in three smartphones shipped is 4G enabled and this is  a three fold increase from same quarter in 2014. Also, according to IDC, smartphones will overtake feature phones sales in 2016.

“e-tailers such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Amazon continue to drive shipments of the Chinese vendors, who have been aggressively trying to capture the 4G smartphone market in India,” said Karthik, senior market analyst, Client Devices.

“Almost one out of every two smartphones sold, had 5-inch plus displays,” said Jaipal Singh , Market Analyst, Client Devices. Most of the popular models in the market today support 4G, have a large screen, and are attractively priced at less than $200. “This highlights the shift in consumer preference from a device mostly used for voice calling to an advanced multimedia experience,” added Singh.

As expected, Samsung held on to #1 position with 24% marketshare, thanks to 13.1% growth (QoQ) and surprisingly, took the top spot amount 4G device makers (from Lenovo). Micromax stayed in second position with 6.4% QoQ growth, thanks to strong sales from YU sub-brand. Intex, Lenovo and Lava rounded off the top five.
