Alcatel launches Onetouch Hero and Idol series of Mobiles in India

Last week, Alcatel launched a bunch of mobiles in India. The devices were priced from Rs 10000 to 30000.

The Alcatel Hero 8020 is a 6 inch device. It has a stylus and comes with a magic flip cover very much similar to the Dot View cover we saw in the HTC One M8. It also come with a mini mobile which is paired by bluetooth with the Hero, so you dont have to use that large 6 inch device to talking calls. Otherwise this 3G device is powered by 1.5 GHz quad core processor. The 6 inch display is full HD and has very thin bezels on the side. It runs on Android 4.2 and is upgradable to 4.4, but no roadmap unknown. It has a 2GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. The memory is expandable upto 32 GB. Hero 8020 has a 13 MP rear camera and 2 MP front facing camera. It has 3400 mAh battery

The Idol series are more targeted towards the young buyers. The Idol mini has a 4.3″ IPS display and powerered by 1.3 GHz dual core processor. It has 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB internal storage. The primary camera is 5MP and the front camera is a VGA. Again it runs on the older Android 4.2. It is priced at Rs 10000.
The Idol X is a 5 inch full HD display device woth 2 GB of RAM and 16/8GB of internal storage. It has a 13 MP rear camera and 2 MP front facing camera. It is available in dual sim variant also.
From my initial impressions, the devices are built quite sturdily. The interface is heavily skinned and it could be lagging at times. In the age where we have top end hardware at price less than Rs 15000 in the market, I believe that Alcatel has got its pricing wrong here. Also I don’t see a point in selling devices running at 4.2 out of box, if OTA updates are truly available already. The devices with low internal memory will not be preferred by the targeted young audience. When cloud is not yet widely accepted due to high costs of data, people still prefer local storage. A low memory device will not only be an issue for storing media, it will also not be able to accommodate many apps.
