Amazon announce WorkMail to compete with Microsoft Outlook Service

WorkMail is the new enterprise email and calendaring service from Amazon that will be part of Amazon Web Services. With WorkMail, Amazon hopes to take on Microsoft’s Outlook email service. While providing secure email access and support for existing desktop and mobile email clients, WorkMail can integrate with Microsoft’s Active Directory services.

Amazon WorkMail also has a web based client that is compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer 9+. Amazon provides 50GB mailbox size by default with a 4$ per user per month subscription fee. Free 30-day trial is available where WorkMail service can be provided for up to 25 users in the organization. Adding Amazon WorkDocs to the service will increase the per user subscription price to just $6 and provides 50GB of WorkMail mailbox storage + 200GB of WorkDocs storage for each user.

Amazon provides strong security policies that can be applied for user’s mobile devices via Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol, setup device encryption, make device lock necessary, specific requirements for device password strength, wipe device remotely using AWS Management Console if the device is lost. As of now, supported device include iOS, Kindle Fire, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry 10 devices.

For those who are using non-WorkMail email clients, Amazon WorkMail migration tool can be used to migrate user’s mailboxes from respective email servers to WorkMail.
