Android dethrones iOS in UK’s tablet market

Many say that 2013 is the year of tablets, we say 2013 is the year of Android tablets. In UK, this is much bigger statement. When sales of tablets for first three quarters of 2013 were calculated, Android tablets grabbed 54% of marketshare, dethroning Apple’s iPad lineup of tablets (which accounted for 36% of sales).

On the whole, 7.6 million tablets were sold in UK, registering 192% of YoY growth. This is mainly attributed to the market penetration of low end and cheap Android tablets. Average selling price for tablets was $407 and on the whole, tablet market generated more than $3 billion in sales. Given that the final quarter has mega shopping week, we will not be surprised to see sales in UK hit $5 billion mark.

“Tablets under £100 have excellent gifting potential this Christmas,” said Francisco  Jeronimo, research directory at IDC. “Parents looking to give gifts to children and teenagers are unlikely to spend £400-500 on a tablet, so tablets sub-£100 are less of an investment and more of an attractive disposable gift that doesn’t matter so much if it gets broken.”

Though Android dethroned iOS from top seat, when it came to revenue, iPad lineup is far ahead, thanks to higher average sale price and iPads monopoly in premium tablet segment. Hit the source link for full report by Guardian.
