Android Platform Distribution numbers show 40% of the users still use a version of Android 2 years old

Google has updated the Android Platform Distribution numbers again for the past month. The updated numbers show Lollipop is still missing from the map because it hasn’t breached even the 0.1% users bracket yet.

To put that into perspective, there are more than at least 4 (possibly 5 or 6) times the number of Froyo users out there than Lollipop users. Froyo was announced in May in 2010, which is more than 4 and a half years old. Lollipop has been out for about 2 months now, and has seen a lot of high profile launches. Even then, the update has been pushed out for the Nexus devices, Moto G, Moto X and a few other flagships.

On the other hand, KitKat has gained handsomely, gaining 5.2% users. The major loser here is Jelly Bean, followed by Gingerbread. Even so, Jelly Bean accounts for 46% of the market. There are three different versions of Jelly Bean, so accounting for the 4.1.x and 4.2.x versions, there are nearly 40% of Android users running a version of Android that is more than 2 years old.
