If you have a truckload of money to throw away, well, this one is for you. Samsung has just announced a massive 16TB SSD and it is also the world’s lightest high capacity 3.5″ form factor SSD. Samsung’s 16TB SSD, PM1633a has 15.36TB of storage space and has 12Gb/s SCSI SAS interface giving blazing speed for enterprise storage. Starting with the 15.36TB density, Samsung  will also release 7.68TB, 3.84TB and 960GB and 480GB SSDs later this year.

“To satisfy an increasing market need for ultra-high-capacity SAS SSDs from leading enterprise storage system manufacturers, we are directing our best efforts toward meeting our customers’ SSD requests,” said Jung-bae Lee, Senior Vice President, Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team, Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to lead the industry with next-generation SSDs, using our advanced 3D V-NAND memory technology, in order to accelerate the growth of the premium memory market while delivering greater performance and efficiency to our customers.”

As expected, the PM1633a has V-NAND memory chips. The 256GB dies are stacked in 16 layers to form a single 512GB package and 32 of these packages are built into the drive to create 15.36TB drive.  The new SSD can hit whopping 200k IOPS read speed and 32k IOPS write speed. This is a thousand times that of SAS type HDDs. The new controller support 12Gb/s bandwidth. Also, one can write 1.36TB of data to the drive every single day without fear of data loss or SSD crash.
