Google to issue security updates every month to Nexus devices and AOSP

Google has taken another big step towards improving the security of its Nexus devices and Android in general. The search giant announced that it will now issue a security update every month to Nexus devices, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Update program. This new update schedule will collate and issue new security patches to Android Open Source Project – AOSP – every month.

Google Nexus security updates

According to the new update policies, Google will work throughout the year, pushing out security updates to its Nexus devices every month. This is like Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, wherein the company pushes out a lot of security updates on a monthly basis. Google also announced that it will upstream these updates to AOSP, so other companies can grab them as soon as they are made available.

This announcement came amidst the Stagefright patch fix that Google released a few hours back. The new update policy also says that Google will push out software updates to every Nexus device for a minimum of two years from its launch. Google will also push out security updates for 3 years from the date of launch of the Nexus device, or for another 18 months from the removal of said device from the Play Store – whichever is longer.
