IDC: Worldwide tablet shipments down in 2Q15 by 7 percent

The tablet shipment numbers are in for second quarter of 2015 and it continues to be bad news for Apple and Samsung. Both companies registered negative growth but the big surprise is that the overall tablet market shrunk 7% last quarter (YoY growth). We all thought that the PC is dying but seeing this, we are starting to feel that the tablet craze is coming to an end and that now more will invest in replacing those old and dying computers at home. Apple, with 10.9 million shipments managed 24.5% share, Samsung with 7.6 million shipments managed to grab 17% of marketshare and Lenovo rounded off the top three with 2.5 million shipments, giving 5.7% share.

Huawei and LG made massive gains but their market share is yet to cross 5%. Apple, Samsung and Lenovo held top three spots and for the first time ever, Apple has less than a quarter marketshare in tablet market.

The main reason for Huawei, LG and Lenovo growth is the inclusion of 2-in-1 devices to the data and without that, we would have seen even bigger decline of shipment number. Apple and Samsung are the only two companies with double digit market share and if Windows 10 manages to push sales of 2-in-1 device, we may see Microsoft entering this table and Lenovo fighting it out with Samsung for 2nd place.
