Intex Elyt Dual – Review

Affordable dual selfie camera mobile

Intex is a major player in the entry-level mobile phone segment in India. It is an Indian company with manufacturing locations spread across the country. Intex is a strong player in the offline market, especially in non-metro cities. The Intex Elyt series of mobile phone offers good value for money and a few features that may not available in other mobiles in the price segment. Elyt Dual is one such mobile which has a dual front-facing camera for a price of Rs 6999. Let us review this selfie centric mobile.

Design

Intex Elyt Dual is a mobile with a plastic body. The back panel is removable and the battery is user replaceable. It has dual SIM card slot and a dedicated SD card slot, under the battery. It has a micro USB port at the bottom and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The volume and power buttons are on the sides. It has a 5-inch display and the off-screen navigation keys are not backlit. Above the display is the 8 MP + 2MP camera with flash. The design may not be a head turner, but in this entry-level segment, the Intex Dual Elyt has a very sensible design and a solid construction.

Display

The display is a 5 inch IPS LDC panel. It supports HD (720×1280 pixels) resolution. The screen has 2.5D curved edges. The box contains a screen protection film and a back case for extra protection. The display is good under most lighting conditions. It is colourful and has good viewing angles. The sensor is slow to detect the ambient light and adjust the brightness. I wish Intex has added a toughened glass protection like in their Elyt E6 mobile.

Hardware and Performance

Intex Elyt Dual is a basic smartphone and has a entry level specifications. This 4G-Volte smartphone is powered by 1.3 GHz quad-core processor & 32-bit Quad Core Spreadtrum 9850 chipset and has 2GB RAM. It has 16 GB of internal storage. The UI in this mobile is a Stock UI and it is very lightweight. So this mobile is good to run all your basic tasks. It can also handle social media apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, etc. I tried playing a few games on it. The basic games are not an issue, but if you start playing heavy graphics games, then the mobile starts to struggle. So this mobile is built for most your basic day-to-day life applications and nothing beyond that.

Camera

The front selfie camera is the highlight of this mobile. At this price point, there is no other mobile that offers a dual front camera with bokeh feature. I was surprised by the bokeh features and its accuracy at this price point. The background blur is natural and the edge detection is good for a basic mobile. One can also change the background image on this mobile. Low light selfies are not impressive, but when the light is ample, the selfies are good. Even the flash in low light is not helping much. The rear camera also can click some impressive shots when there is good light. Flash performance is not impressive. The colour temperature is cold while clicking with flash. But that is just me nit-picking. Overall, for an entry-level smartphone, the Elyt Dual has a good camera performance.

Software

The mobile runs on basic Android 7.0 UI with no skin on top. I installed about 10-15 apps and it has no signs of lag. The hardware is capable of handling the stock UI. There is no bloatware apart from a couple of value-add apps from Intex’s partners.

Battery

The mobile is powered by a 2400 mAh removable battery. It is very rare to see a removable battery in any price range today. But I am glad that Intex is still sticking to that kind of design. Though 2400 mAh may sound less on paper, in the real world it lasts for a day of usage. It has a 5 inch HD screen and a basic processor which is the reason for the low power consumption.

Verdict

There are a few mobiles out there in this price range, like the Redmi 5A, Redmi 4, Redmi Y1 lite, etc… But none of these mobiles has dual selfie camera, removable battery and stock Android. The Intex Elyt Dual is a basic entry level mobile and it would satisfy any user whose needs are not demanding heavy performance.
