Samsung announce 14nm FinFET process, to be used for Exynos 7 Octa

Samsung has announced today that the new 14nm FinFET process technology is ready for use to create chips that are 20% faster in speed, consume 35% less power and provide 30% higher productivity gain when compared to chips manufactured using 20nm fabrication process. The new process will be used to manufacture the upcoming Exynos 7 Octa (8 core chip that is set to scorch benchmarks) SoC for smartphones and tablets.

Also, thanks to a 3D FinFET structure on transistors, the new SoCs designs can scale much better and can overcome limitations of planar structured used in current generation process (20nm and older).

“Samsung’s advanced 14nm FinFET process technology is undoubtedly the most advanced logic process technology in the industry,” said Gabsoo Han, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, System LSI Business, Samsung Electronics. “We expect the production of our 14nm mobile application processor to positively impact the growth of the mobile industry by enabling further performance improvements for cutting-edge smartphones.”
