Sharp introduces a 5.5 inch display with 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution

Sharp, the Japanese giant specializing in manufacture of different electronic products has announced the launch of a super high resolution 5.5 inch display Ultra HD 4K resolution for smartphones.

Recently, Android OEMs had announced the launch of phones with a high resolution Quad HD display – ranging from LG, Samsung to HTC and others, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels becoming the new standard to any flagship smartphone in 2015. With pixel densities in the north of 500 PPI, these companies were seemingly offering a resolution that was so far considered unnecessary and a drain on precious resources.

The new display announced by Sharp is a 5.5 inch LCD unit based on IGZO tech, with a Ultra HD 4K resolution – many of us may not even have a 4K resolution television set in our homes. The resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels, with the pixel density crossing 800 PPI, at ~806 PPI.

Sharp hopes to start shipping its 5.5 inch 4K Ultra HD LCD displays in 2016, so there’s still some time.
