Google launches Chrome Music Lab

Chrome Music LabGoogle has introduced the Chrome Music Lab as part of the Music In Our Schools month. It is aimed at students, but open to anyone which lets them explore how music works. It lets you use your web browser to play with musical elements like sound, rhythm, and melody.

Users will be able to learn things about music such as basic concepts like chords and rhythm, and also more advanced topics like harmonics, oscillators, and more. When you access the Chrome Music Lab webpage, you will see a variety of experiments to try out. There are 12 different interactive experiments available on it.

Under each heading on the Chrome Music Lab page you can play around with tools that let you create music. The rhythm tool lets you create your own rhythm beats with triangles and drums, while the Chords tool shows how Chords work as opposed to striking notes on a keyboard.

Spectrogram provides a visual representation of all of the frequencies produced by different sound sources and Sound Waves represents the sounds into a grid of blue dots as if they were air molecules. Melody Maker allows you to add notes to a grid and choose the speed to play them. You can either select fast or slowly.

Exploring music can help spark curiosity in all kinds of ways. We hope these experiments inspire you – whether they give you a new perspective on music, make you more curious about math and science, or even make you think of new ways to teach or code.
