Redmi Go – Launched in India – Messiah of the Masses?

Redmi mobiles have always carried the philosophy of making technology affordable by everyone. In India, the feature phone market is still strong and the penetration of smartphones has barely scratched the surface. A good smartphone has been expensive and not yet affordable by everyone. Redmi wanted to take a stab at this and have introduced the Redmi Go in India.

They already have Redmi 5A in the sub 6k department, but with the Redmi Go, they went a little deeper into the market and lighter on the wallet. The mobile was launched in India today at a price of Rs 4499.

Redmi Go – Key Specifications

  • Storage: 8 GB

  • microSD: Yes – Dedicated SD card slot
  • OS: Android Oreo GO
  • UI: Stock UI
  • Dimension: 140.1 x 70.1 x 8.35 mm
  • Weight: 137 g

Redmi Go will be available in 2 colors in India: Black and Blue. It is made of plastic. Redmi Go, unlike the other mobiles running on MIUI, runs on Android GO. Android GO is the best suited version of android for a entry level hardware configuration. The mobile supports over 20+ regional languages. It also supports Google Assistant in Hindi. It has a noise cancellation mic for better quality on the voice calls. It supports 4G VoLTE. It has 3000 mAh battery and overall, it looks to be a very good package for the price.

Redmi Go does not have: Notification LED, Gyroscope, Magnetic Sensor, Fingerprint sensor, Face unlock. But these are not expected on this price range. I have seen face unlock in this price segment, but they are usually laggy. It is better not to have a feature, which does not suit the hardware.

Overall, I feel that the Redmi Go is a good value for money and a good option for anyone looking to shift from a feature phone, buy their first smartphone or even own a secondary backup phone.
