First 100 beta testers are getting Google’s project Ara modular phone for free

First 100 beta testers who signed up for Project Ara testing will be provided with free modular phone. Over 90,000 people signed up for testing at dscout site. Over the coming 8 months, Google will be shipping these devices to beta testers.

If you have never heard of Project Ara, this is another open source initiative from Google. Google has been working on developing a ‘open hardware’ platform for everyone to use and create modular smartphones. If this works out, gone will be those days when we get phone based on what the OEM builds and instead we will be able to assemble the phone using modular blocks and then do upgrades/swapping modules from the market or friends. In short, this is very much similar to assembled PCs where buyers pick the components they need and keep upgrading instead of changing the whole computer.
