Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge launched – specs and release date

Samsung launched its latest flagships, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge at the Mobile World Congress 2015 yesterday. In a fancy seaside event in Barcelona, the Korean manufacturer unveiled the successors to the Galaxy S5 and launched an Edge version of the Galaxy S6.

Both the phones come with identical specs, with slight variations in a couple of areas. And this time around, Samsung has finally gone full thrusters with a combination of metal and glass, making the flagship phone finally look good. While the Galaxy S6 might not be the best looking Samsung device, let alone a smartphone from any company, it does look quite good this time around. The Galaxy S6 Edge with its curved screen on the left and the right sides looks extremely good, even better than the Note 4 Edge and the Galaxy S6.

Samsung Galaxy S6

There’s an unfortunate camera hump again on the Galaxy S6, something that Samsung seems to really like for some reason. But otherwise, both the devices are a big departure from the traditional plastic and faux metal and leather that Samsung seemed to really prefer.

The Galaxy S6 comes with a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display. As has been expected, it packs in a quad HD resolution. The result is an amazing pixel density of 577 PPI. The display on the Note 4 has been praised all around, so it is expected that the display on the Galaxy S6 will also best everything else on the market. It’s not surprising, considering the fact that Samsung uses its own displays in its flagships. This display is protected by Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass 4.

Coming to the other specs, this time Samsung has gone ahead with its own processors. The Galaxy S6 comes with Exynos 7420. Built on a 14nm process, the Exynos 7420 has four Cortex A57 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz. This beast is assisted by a Mali-T760 GPU and 3 GB RAM. Early benchmark reports indicate that the Exynos 7420 obliterates its competition by a big margin. Exciting times ahead.

Here are the detailed specs:

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop with TouchWiz on top
  • 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display, QHD resolution, ~577 PPI
  • 64-bit Exynos 7420 octa core processor, four Cortex A57 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz; Mali T-760 GPU
  • 16 MP ISOCELL camera, LED flash, Optical Image Stabilization, 4K recording; front facing 5 MP camera capable of 1080p recording at 30 FPS
  • 3 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32 / 64 / 128 GB internal memory, non-expandable
  • LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, wireless charging, fingerprint sensor
  • 2550 mAh battery, non-removable

Non-removable battery, non-expandable storage might come as a disappointment to a lot of Samsung loyalists. If there was one thing that many Samsung users appreciated, these two were on the top of that list.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Moving on to the Galaxy S6 Edge, it has identical specs to the Galaxy S6, save for the physical dimensions and the curved screen. The battery is also a tad higher capacity one, at 2600 mAh. Apart from that, there’s no difference.

Additionally, Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to bring a few offers to the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge. Every buyer gets 100 GB free space on Microsoft OneDrive for a period of 2 years. Both the phones will be available in 4 colours each, in 20 countries starting April 10th. The pricing varies from country to country, but expect a price of $700 for the 32 GB version of the Galaxy S6 and $850 for the 32 GB version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. We will update you once more details are revealed closer to the launch.
