Seagate announced entry into consumer SSD business with three products

It has been more than a decade since consumer class SSDs started hitting global markets (the sales picked up in last 3-4 years after the steep fall in price) and all the while we were wondering why Seagate has not entered the SSD market (Seagate has been concentrating a lot on hybrid hard drives). After all, Seagate is leading HDD maker and it wont take much longer for SSDs to start taking off huge chunks of marketshare from HDDs.

This week, Seagate has announced their arrival into consumer SSD market with 600, 600 Pro and 1200 models. Also, Seagate X8 Accelerator storage class memory PCIe card is announced (powered by Virident). While 600 SSD is meant for laptops, 600 pro SSD and 1200 SSDs are available for servers and cloud computing. We do hope that Seagate starts well in SSD market.

“We are pleased to announce these new flash memory products. With these new drives, Seagate solidifies its commitment to the flash-based storage market by delivering enterprise SSDs and server-side solutions as well as client solutions,” said Gary Gentry, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate’s solid state drive business. “By adding more SSDs to our family of hard disk and solid state hybrid drives, we now have the broadest portfolio of storage products in the industry, delivering one-stop shopping for our customers and partners. And we’re just getting started. Seagate is committed to becoming a premier supplier of both solid state drives and storage class memory products. We have put in place a winning strategy for developing multiple high value, flash based products and solutions for our customers.”

Seagate 600 SSD

Available in 2.5” form factor for laptops, 600SSD delivers fast boot up speed, faster application loading and high speed copy. Boot spped will be upto four times faster, and will load applications twice as fast as a standard hard drive. 600 SSD will be available in different sizes upto 480GB and is compatible with SATA 3 6Gbps. Also, given that 600 SSD can be upto 5mm thin, this can be used in ultrabooks.

SSDs continue to be among the most popular product categories on Newegg.com as more consumers increasingly turn to them to deliver more speed, faster boot up times and superior performance,” said Patrick Chung, vice president of global product management at Newegg. “Seagate’s new line of SSDs, including the new 600 SSD, will be a great addition to our existing assortment. We’re excited to introduce the new SSDs to our customers and look forward to continuing our strategic partnership with Seagate.”

Seagate 600 Pro SSD

600 Pro is a low power SSD meant for servers and storage solutions. This SSD is best for those who need high performance drives that operate at very low power. As per Seagate, 600 Pro SSD has best in class performance efficiency and IOPS/watt value. Similar to 600 SSD, 600 Pro is available in sizes upto 480GB capacity in 2.5” form factor and 6Gb/s SATA interface

“By incorporating Seagate’s SSD technology into our product offerings we are able to address customer demand for greater speed, short, consistent response times, and greater enclosure and power efficiencies,” said Paul Poynter, CTO Rorke Data, an Avnet business unit. “As we continue to drive PC innovation in today’s markets, we look forward to integrating this enterprise SSD technology into our Rorke product line providing our discerning customers with the ultimate in performance and value.”

Seagate 1200 SSD

This is the fastest of all and supports upto 12Gb/s SAS connector. 1200 SSD is meant for high demand enterprise storage and complex server arrangements. Good thing is that unlike other SSDs from Seagate, this one is available upto 800GB capacity and comes in 1.8” and 2.5” form factor.
Seagate X8 Accelerator

Seagate has partnered with Virident, a major player in Storage Class Memory (SCM) storage solutions to provide Seagate X8 Accelerator that boosts server performance via a PCIe card that provides upto 1.1 million IOPS. Upto 2.2 TB of storage is supported by X8.
