Sonos announce new flagship PLAY 5 speaker

Sonos, the leader in multi room audio systems, has announce PLAY:5, a new flagship speaker with Trueplay audio tuning. TruePlay tuning software will be available for SONOS PLAY:1®, SONOS PLAY:3®, SONOS PLAY:5 at first and other models will be added to the list later. Available in a custom matte black and matte white finish, the all-new SONOS PLAY:5 will retail for $499 USD, $549 CAD, $749 AUS, €579 and £429.

SONOS PLAY:5 is the best you can get now from Sonos. This model has six custom designed synchronized drivers, three mid-woofers and three tweeters for high-range sound. You can place PLAY:5 in three orientations and you can pair multiple PLAY:5 speakers to create an immersive experience. The touch controls on PLAY:5 can be used to control playback, volume and the controls change their order according to speaker’s orientation so that the volume up is always volume up (etc). TruePlay uses microphone on iPad/iPhone to analyze a special tone emitted by the PLAY:5 speaker and then tunes the audio based on how the earlier test note reflected off walls and other surfaces in the room.

PLAY5-Exploded-View

“Trueplay is a revolutionary system that gives music lovers confidence that they’re hearing what their favorite artists labored to produce, independent of the room’s acoustics and speaker location,” said CEO John MacFarlane.

“Finally there’s a simple, reliable process that delivers studio-quality listening experiences in each room of the home.” “Our remit at Sonos has evolved from constantly working to improve the general sound of all of our speakers to customizing them: first by room, and in the future, by person, activity and content,” said record producer, composer, and Sonos sound experience leader Giles Martin. “We are obsessed with improving the home music experience, which must take into account acoustically unfriendly rooms. Tuning a room is the first of many software enhancements that make the experience richer and more personal for listeners whilst giving artists a whole new creative arena.”
