Twitter enters crowded music service market with ‘Twitter #music’

After days of speculation, the announcement is official now. Twitter has launched music service today and is called ‘Twitter #music’. Twitter #music uses iTunes, Spotify and Rdio to source music to the users and is currently available for iOS users and on music.twitter.com while Android application will take a little bit more time.  Right now, the service is only available in US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Consider Twitter #music as a music+social media service clubbed at a deep level. If you think that spotify partnership with facebook for music playback is deep, this shows how deep a social network can be built into music service. A great way to listen to music is by navigating to #nowplaying view and try songs tweeted by Artists and tweeps that you are following. Artist’s twitter pages will be linked to their songs/albums and you can follow an artist right from their album/song page or can check the artist/band twitter profile.

“Twitter and music go great together. People share and discover new songs and albums every day. Many of the most-followed accounts on Twitter are musicians, and half of all users follow at least one musician. This is why artists turn to Twitter first to connect with their fans — and why we wanted to find a way to surface songs people are tweeting about. We offered music artists an early look at the service. You can see some of their reactions below. We hope you like it, too.”, said Stephen Philips, Founder of We Are Hunted.
