Time spend on messaging and social apps, by Indians, grew up by 52% – Flurry Analytics

Mobile consumers in India are night owls: with peak usage rolling in around 9PM. Indian users are generally slower to turn to their phones in the morning but quickly scale usage throughout the later morning hours.

Flurry, is a mobile analytics, monetization and advertising platform, which was recently acquired by Yahoo. Flurry help developers to understand mobile advertising in their apps and marketers to understand the end users. Flurry conducted a study in India to understand mobile app usage among Indians and the study reports reveal interesting insights.

We know that app usage is on the rise in India as India is one of the fastest growing market for smartphones. Flurry puts a number to that knowledge and says that there is 43% YoY growth of app usage in India. Specifically Indians like to spend time on Messaging and social apps as these apps saw a growth of 52%. Indians prefer larger devices and phablets (above 5.5 inch) have a whooping 61% market share.

Here are some of the interesting findings from the study

India has about 12 mobile manufactures holding significant market share. Samsung is leading the race with about 40% while Apple is way behind in India. US, has Apple leading and it has little less than 6 major players in the field.

While the curve is pretty similar, looking closely would tell you that Indian use apps more at night, compared to day time.

Indians prefer larger devices and phablets (above 5.5 inch) have a whooping 61% market share.

When it comes to App categories, Music, Media and Entertainment based apps had a phenomenal 188% growth last year. With JIO in the field and other MSP reducing their data prices, this is about to blow up, more than ever.

Other interesting findings

With most of the mobile having their own theme and customization engine, less Indians prefer apps for personalization. This segment of apps saw a decrease at -32%
E-Commerce and shopping apps are steadily increasing by 12% in India while the global YoY growth is 31%
Surprisingly, gaming apps have declined by 4% globally and in India, it is seeing a marginal growth by 12%
