IDC : Notebook PC sales rise in India in 2Q2016, HP reclaims top spot

Though the overall PC shipment delinced 2.2% YoY, when compared QoQ, notebook sales and consumer desktop sales registered slight growth. We should see the sales increase even more as the festival shopping season is about to start. HP, Dell and Lenovo took the top three spots while Acer and ASUS came in fourth and fifth. These top five vendors shipped nearly 80% of computers in India. In total, 1.09 million units were shipped last quarter.

HP managed to grow by 3.4 percentage points, thanks to competitive pricing and strong retail presence. Dell grew slightly (0.7%). Lenovo on the other hand declined by 12.1%. Now that Lenovo has managed to streamline their inventory and retail channel, we should expect a strong upturn for Lenovo. These three makers are also preferred choice of laptop makers among buyers in India. Given that there is a good rise in notebook PC shipments, we expect these three companies to make strong profits in second half of 2016 in India.

According to Manish Yadav , Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India, the overall consumer PC market recorded 1.05 million units, a quarter-on-quarter growth of 14.5 percent over Q1 2016.Consumer spending throughout the quarter remained lukewarm, however owing to seasonality quarter ended up with a positive momentum. With forthcoming benefits from the 7th Pay commission and increased budget allocation for rural India, coupled with a good monsoon the rural demand is anticipated to improve, while urban demand is steadily picking-up”.
