Android Go : All you need to know

Android Go is Google’s answer to Android’s biggest problem, dependency on powerful CPU and RAM. Android Go is a special edition Android Oreo operating system, designed to run on ultra low cost phones. Android Oreo devices with 512MB to 1GB of memory will come with the all the Go optimizations. Read on to know how Android Go works!

Android Oreo Go edition is made up of three key components:

  • OS : Google made massive performance and storage improvements to the OS, including data management features and security benefits.
  • Google Apps: Google designed new set of apps that are lighter and run faster on phones with very less amount of RAM and entry level CPU/GPU.
  • Google Play Store : The new Google Play Store on Android GO edition comes with new section that highlights apps designed to work best on Go devices.

Tuned applications on Android GO are 15% faster than non-tuned applications on same phone. Also, the total size of Android Oreo Go edition ROM is much less than that of full fledged Android Oreo. Applcations tuned for Android Go take up to 50% less space.

Another great feature of Android Go is its data saving capabilities. Data Save, when enabled in Chrome can save average user, more than 600MB of data per year. The built in data saver feature can also help you manage which apps can be allowed to use background data.

Huge number of google apps are redesigned for GO edition. Preinstalled on Android Oreo (Go edition) devices, this set of optimized apps includes Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome, and the new Files Go app by Google. Even with all this stripping of features and size, Android Oreo Go edition is as secure as Android Oreo OS.

This is exactly what Android needs as phones that come with 1GB or 2GB or RAM are largely ignored as they cannot run Android without lag or without hanging. Android Go would give budget phone makers a huge advantage to create phones that cost under 5000 INR and yet run without lag or crashes. A good number of Android GO edition phones are announced at MWC 2018.
