[IDC] PC market continues to grow in 2Q21

For PC market, 2020 was a very good year. After years of decline in PC sales, sales took upturn due to dependency on online classes and WFH setups. This trend has continued well into 2021. Global shipments of PCs was up 13.2% in second quarter of 2021 (2Q21) when compared to 2Q20. The growth in sales slowed a bit, lower than 55.9% growth in previous quarter and 25.8% of growth in Q420.

“The PC market’s hot streak continued to drive heavy investments from the supply side including the entry of new vendors as well as additional spend from underdogs,” said Jitesh Ubrani research manager for IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers. “And while the top 5 continue to drive volume, the smaller vendors have helped drive growth by offering unique features or niche designs.”

“The market faces mixed signals as far as demand is concerned,” said Neha Mahajan, senior research analyst with IDC’s Devices and Displays Group. “With businesses opening back up, demand potential in the commercial segment appears promising. However, there are also early indicators of consumer demand slowing down as people shift spending priorities after nearly a year of aggressive PC buying.”

Lenovo maintained its position at the top, followed by HP and Dell. Apple managed to continue in top 5, with Acer rounding off top 5.

As you can see in following chart, the top 5 have managed to hold their position for last five quarters. Given increasing inclination towards Apple products, there is a very good chance of Apple solidifying fourth place. The top three (Lenovo, HP and Dell) are far ahead of other brands and will not face any kind of challenge from other brands.
