Samsung Galaxy S10 can be unlocked using 3D printed fingerprint

This is not good and this raises lot of security questions. Samsung’s brand new Galaxy S10 comes with ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the display. On imgur, user named darkshark tried to unlock his Galaxy S10 using 3D printed fingerprint and after few tries with various depths for ridges, he was able to unlock his phone.

Till recently, most of the phones came with capacitive fingerprint sensors (either front side or back side) and now more and more phone makers are going with optical or ultrasonic sensors. These new sensors can be placed underneath the display allowing edge to edge front and a clean looking back. But unlike capacitive sensors, these does not rely on tiny charge passing through the finger’s ridges and just rely on reflected ultrasonic or optical pulses. This makes it easier to unlock a phone by stealing fingerprint.

You can find how darkshark managed to create a 3D fingerprint to fool the phone’s sensor in this page : https://imgur.com/gallery/8aGqsSu
