Web Browsing, Mobile Search, and IM Most Frequently Used Mobile Services in India

Smartphone ownership in India is continuing to grow at a rapid rate, outpacing the growth of more basic mobile phones.  With India being the third largest smartphone market in the world, it is poised to be the next big growth opportunity for smartphone manufacturers. A new report from the Media and Services UX (MSX) group at Strategy Analytics has investigated the use of mobile data services in India via a web-based survey.

Mobile phone owners in India are driven to use services which help them to gather information (mobile search and web browsing) and communicate with services which offer enhanced features (i.e. IM, email, and social networking).  Furthermore, web browser, mobile search and IM services, were used by more than 60% of Indian survey respondents on a daily basis.

Christopher Dodge, Associate Director, MSX and report author, commented, “As these are the core services which users in India want to use with the greatest frequency among other mobile services available, Indian mobile operators and device OEMs which distribute to Indian consumers should look to prioritize and enhance web-browsing, mobile search and IM services. This will help to serve as differentiators in an emerging crowded handset market and drive earlier consumer adoption, which can in turn lead to greater consumer loyalty.”
