Android Wear gets cellular support, LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE first to have it

Google today announced a new update for Android Wear that brings cellular support to the open source smartwatch platform. The new update is hardware dependent and while Google has not revealed much in this regard, the company announced a cellular version of the existing LG Watch Urbane 2nd edition.

LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE

Android Wear already comes with good enough connectivity options, but all of them rely on either your smartphone or a Wi-Fi network. This way, while you gain some sort of mobility, you are still dependent on other things to be able to make use of many Android Wear features like notifications support etc. Today, with cellular support for Android Wear, you will now be able to use all of the data-connectivity dependent features by connecting your watch to LTE. This will of course require a separate sim card and a data plan.

Google also announced the first Android Wear watch with cellular support. The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE will be available from AT&T and Verizon. Customers in other markets will have to wait for now – Google says that the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE will be available in the coming months in other countries.
