Twitter introduces Group Direct Messages and Video sharing

Twitter has been adding a bunch of features recently, and removing some. Two new features that have made it to the social network today – group Direct Messaging and video sharing. The updates will be rolling out over the next few days to the official apps.

Essentially private group chats, Group Direct Messages will allow you to add people and form a group to start chatting with them in private. If you start a group and add a few members in the group, others in that group can add more people, provided they follow you. It sounds a bit complex, but it’s actually well thought-out.

Apart from that, Twitter has added video sharing to its service. Sharing videos will be just like sharing images – you can start recording one right from the app or browse your phone’s camera roll to share the ones you’ve already recorded. However, sharing already recorded videos will be iOS-only, for now. Android will get this ability soon, so we’re assuming they haven’t yet completed optimizing it for Android so far.

Twitter hasn’t said anything about the Windows Phone version, though, which is a bummer. There’s no word about allowing third-party apps access to these new features via an API either, but we’ll be on the lookout for that one.
