Sony “Concept for Android” is a stock Android experiment, calls Xperia Z3 users to test it

After Motorola, stock Android seems to have caught Sony’s fancy. The Japan based troubled phone maker has started a new stock Android experiment, calling it “Concept for Android”. To test it, the company is seeking Xperia Z3 users.

There is little detail available about Sony’s latest experiment, so we won’t be able to talk much about it. However, this new testing is being limited to only the Xperia Z3 for now. Apart from that particular detail, Sony mentioned a few other things about the concept itself. According to the company, this new experiment will feature near-stock Android. The user interface is not being touched, but things like Sony’s apps and certain optimizations will continue to exist to set apart its Xperia experience from its competitors. This might actually be the closest thing to a Sony Nexus smartphone, and the experiment is an interesting direction that Sony could end up taking.

Sony’s Xperia UI does not deviate a lot from stock Android, but Sony has had trouble making things work smooth and fine for a long time now. In the past it was due to inadequate hardware, but of late the trouble has been mostly with the software. We also don’t really know if Sony will actually use this as a standard UI for its phones in the future, so don’t read too much into it.
