Microsoft Surface Book is the company’s first laptop

Sort of. Microsoft just announced the Surface Book, the company’s first laptop. And not unexpectedly, you can still detach it from the keyboard to use it as a tablet. Staying true to its Surface branding, the Surface Book offers the perfect typing experience of a laptop, with the portability of a tablet. Microsoft has been trying to do this since the first Surface was launched, but the Surface Book is the best execution of that vision till date. Across the industry.

Microsoft Surface Book

The new Microsoft Surface Book comes with a 13.5 inch display with a pixel density of 267 PPI. You can opt for any one of the two Intel Core sixth generation processors – Core i5 or Core i7. There’s abundant RAM as well, up to 16 GB with the internal storage maxing out at 512 GB. That’s half of what the top of the line Surface Pro 4 offers, but it’s still a lot. The more interesting things are around the detachable keyboard. Microsoft says that the keyboard houses a discrete NVIDIA Geforce GPU to help with the graphics rendering.

The dedicated GPU with help from other components makes the Surface Book twice as fast as the MacBook Air, and about 40% faster than the Surface Pro 3. For these speed benefits though, you will have to keep the Surface Book docked in as the GPU is housed under the keyboard.

Pre-orders for the Surface Book have already begun and the prices start at $1499 for the 128 GB/8 GB with Core i5, Intel HD graphics, and go up to $2699 for the 512 GB/16 GB with Core i7 and Nvidia GPU. The Surface Book will be generally available starting October 26th.
